What is Word Finder

Word Finder is a simple online tool for turning a set of rules into every word that matches, making it easy to plan plays for Scrabble, Words With Friends and similar board games. Filter by word length, the letters a word starts or ends with, letters that must appear or must be avoided, and an exact pattern. Pair it with the Anagram Solver or Wordle Helper when you need a different angle, and switch dictionaries whenever the game calls for it.

How the Word Finder Works?

Combine any of the filters and our engine searches a 270,000-word dictionary to return every valid word that fits — no guessing, no scrolling through words you cannot play.

  1. Set a length range

Choose a minimum and maximum word length so results stay within the tiles or spaces you have to work with.

  2. Add letter rules

Tell the finder which letters a word must start with, end with, contain, or avoid to narrow the list fast.

  3. Use a pattern

Enter a pattern with ? for any single letter and * for any run of letters to match an exact shape.

  4. Get every match

See every valid word that fits your rules, then tap one to check its meaning before you play it.

Tips for scoring better!

Word Finder helps you spot the words hiding inside your rack and the board. It is great for settling disputes, but aim to learn as you go — a few short words and simple tactics make it much easier to score in every play.

  • Learn 2-letter and 3-letter words
  • Use the starts-with and ends-with filters to plan hooks
  • Master high-value tiles such as Q, Z, X and J
  • Use patterns to clear your rack and plan for bingos
